How about a sensible review of this toaster?
After years of cheap toasters and expensive toaster ovens we had practically forgotten how nice a proper toaster was. This unit not only lowers and raises neatly, but it also holds the bread perfectly centered. Toasting is even and done at the right speed. Any faster and the interior of the bread would not be heated enough. "Fast" toasters always have this issue, but some folks don't care so long as it's crispy and looks toasted. Longer toast times will dry most breads out, as with many toaster ovens. A setting of 4 is just right for most toast lovers. The unit stays cool and the display counts down on a segment meter to show you the progress. Is the toasting done evenly? Yup, or about as even as I might expect. In fact I don't think I've seen toast done more evenly anywhere, but anyone measuring the geometry of toasted corners with a spectro-meter may choose to differ.
The beep is loud when done, probably so I can hear it if I've wandered off to get the butter from the car. Since no one sleeps in the kitchen we haven't too many bleary eyed complaints about toaster-noise. Our microwave also beeps and keeps beeping if you don't open the door at the end of a cycle. Our pricey toaster-oven beeps just as much as this toaster. Our oven also beeps. I don't think the fridge beeps, but it moans on occasion. I suppose if I set them all off together I might be able to create a appliance concert to wake the house and set the dogs howling.
I can cook two eggs over-easy and the toast is ready on setting 4 at about the same time the eggs are. I don't know who needs toast faster, but perhaps they should get up earlier. Keep in mind that different breads toast differently. White bread works just fine on settings 2 or 3, but setting 4 is better for whole wheat. English Muffins are notorious for taking longer to toast, so setting 6 is the way to go!
Build quality and the overall look of the unit are excellent, but I can't comment on durability as my dad just bought this for us! I'm giving this 5 stars instead of 6 because it fails to butter the toast for me.
