We bought this toaster a couple of months ago to replace the old Hamilton Beach cheap-piece-o-junk toaster that we had kept around for 5 or 6 years even though it didn't work all that well. At least it toasted both sides. We thought spending a little more money for a new toaster would equal better quality. Sure, it's sleek and looks nice on the kitchen counter, but it's permanently stuck on the bagel setting, so the outer coils never heat up. It was probably used less than twenty times, and now it's fairly useless. In contrast, I have a cheap, ugly little dollar store toaster at work that works like a champ. So if you want a sleek, stylish toaster that will only toast bagels, come and fish it out of my garbage. Sometimes you DON'T get what you pay for...

This is a truly great toaster. So far I have toasted store-bought and home made breads (both white and wheat, and yes there is a difference), English muffins, and toaster waffles. I never really thought the "count-down" bar would be of interest to me but I really appreciate it now that I have it - my toast and eggs are always done and hot at the same time. The extra "lift" on the handle is also great for getting to those smaller items (i.e. English muffins) without burning your fingers. If this holds up like the old Toast Master I had, then this will have been a great purchase.

BTW, the only reason I didn't give five stars is because I think it's over-priced; I know that probably 25% of the price is for branding.

UPDATE: We've had this toaster a year now and it's starting to "fade" a bit. It has begun to toast unevenly side-to-side and even up and down. That wouldn't be a HUGE deal after a year, but I paid a LOT of money for this toaster and would have expected it to perform better, and over a longer period of time. I think I will spend considerably less next time and just figure on replacing more frequently; I could have bought three toasters for the price of this one!

Okay, my copy of this toaster says "Golden" on the side, and has a different model number if you squint hard enough at the label on the bottom, but looking at the detailed photos, it's exactly the same toaster. Seriously, who's going to pirate the control designs on this toaster? I'm picturing them getting punched out by the tens of thousands in some factory in China, and getting a bewildering array of labels slapped onto the sides of the toasters, or maybe just the boxes they come in. You can see this same toaster under several different names here on Amazon.

And every one of those toasters makes the world a better place. I haven't had it for long, and it took me all the way up to the second try to find a setting I liked (medium tan toast, a bit darker than a new pair of chinos). So I can't comment on how it will last, but it's a friggin toaster. There's not that much that can go wrong.

And just this morning, as I indulged in my slow-weekend-morning breakfast ritual (bacon, eggs, more bacon, toast, bacon, and some prairie dog's milk just to fend off the cliche monster), this thing yet again punched out two slices of toast so perfectly toasted that I thought to myself "the world must know of the powers this toaster possess." I'll take toast glamour shots later and upload them, but all I have right now is wheat bread, and I want to include a slice or two of white in the photo spread (get it? I crack myself up). So you'll just have to wait for that, and in the meantime just take my word for it that this thing can make truly outstanding toast. Which is remarkable, considering that peeking inside reveals absolutely no toast-engineering wizardry. It's little resistance wires outside a standoff rack, just like every other toaster I've ever peeked inside of. But dang, sometimes engineers (even toast engineers) just hit those magic parameters of classic design elements that reveals why the classic design elements are classic.

It makes good toast, is what I'm saying.

I like bargains, so I bought this toaster to grace our new house. The metal is thin and some of the panels shifted while taking it out of the box. They slipped right back in, but you could tell this wasn't a higher quality model.

Good points:

I like the 'stop' button- this feature allows you to pop up the toast at any time without having to jiggle the levers.

It toasts well. Nice and even, with very little 'hot spots'.

Bad points:

The adjustment knobs have a small nick in them to let you know where you're adjusting the toasting level, but it's VERY small and not marked- so you have to play blindman's bluff to try to see what setting the toaster is on. A simple little white mark is really all that is needed- maybe a little line of paint will do the trick.

The bottom does not come out to clean or remove crumbs without removing two screws- there are two metal flaps under this toaster (one screw each), so you have to turn the thing upside down to unscrew it. Really discourages cleaning the toaster regularly.

This is NOT a sturdy toaster- I wouldn't trust it to last if it dropped on the floor.

Overall assessment:

Basically a good toaster if you don't use it a lot and place it somewhere secure. We toast bagels a lot, so we expect this to not last as long as previous models we've had. Not a bad deal, but not a great one either. This is the toaster to get if you know you're going to save up for a better model later, but need something to tide you over until then.

I needed a new toaster to replace the one ( a T-fal 4 slice toaster) I purchased 11 years ago. This new toaster is meeting my needs - just barely. You definitely get what you pay for! This toaster has to be turned up to its' highest to brown the bread and the slots are not wide enough to toast a bagel. I have to push bagels into the slots, the unplug the toaster and dig the bagels out with a fork when they're brown enough. I'm not complaining. As I said, I got what I paid for.

KitchenAid finally develped a toaster with the automatic lower and raise features. This was a notable feature on the Sunbeam Toastmaster toaster of the 1950s. I grew up with this toaster and still use it. I purchased another on Ebay for a back up. Anyone who has followed these on Ebay knows how much people value these features. I've been amazed that the toaster companies have not caught on sooner and developed a version which KitchenAid finally has. This toaster has some improvements over it's older predecessor. It has a very nice blue readout of the heating time which is adjustable with the front knobs. It also has wider slots for bagels and English muffins. I made an English muffin last night, and it was perfect. It also has reheat and defrost settings which I have not used yet.
The auto up and down features work well. No more toast jumping out of the toaster. I have read other reviews complaining of the beep informing you of the toast being done. This is no different than my microwave or coffee maker's beep notification. It is not overly loud or long. Just a nice notification beep.
Like all modern toasters with wider slots, the heating elements are further away from the toast, and I suspect the safety requirements have changed, so it takes longer to toast than with my Sunbeam, but it toasts evenly. Unfornately, longer toasting time means slightly drier toast, but it is still good. I've only used mine twice for toast so far. 5 was too dark. I used 4 this morning, which wasn't bad, but I think I'll try 3 next time. It may make the toast a little less dry.
KitchenAid should be touting this toaster, but they just now put the 2 slice version on their website. I emailed them (twice) to ask about it, and they said they did not want to compete with their retailers. C'mon KitchenAid, you can advertise and show your wares without offering to sell them on your site. Just offer links to the retailers who have them. It's a toaster. It does its job, and it does it well. Several other reviews mention that the lower settings are too hot and end up burning the bread, but I have not found this to be the case with my unit. Settings 1-4 provide good variability in heating, while anything above 4 will burn whatever happens to be in the slots at the time. The toaster is stylish and simple; it is a pleasure to look at. The included toast rack/bun warmer is a nice addition, however I don't use it myself. I'm a huge fan of the "peek" functionality that allows you to see how your toast or bagel is coming along if you are the curious type. My only nitpick with the appliance is that the number settings on the dial are very difficult to spot -- you need to get real close to read the small numbers on the reflective finish. Ultimately, if you are looking for a stylish toaster that works well and don't mind spending the extra coin, this kMix model fits the bill.

Overall I'm pleased with this toaster but it's not perfect. While it toasts evenly and is easy to use, the slots aren't long enough for some breads I've found. These aren't special breads, but normal loaves from the store. This requires me to lay the slice in length-wise and have about 1 inch stick out of the top (not getting toasted). Bagels can be a very tight fit depending on their size (length and width). English muffins toast perfectly, and are easy to remove. Also, as a nitpick, the buttons for the controls have a cheap feel to them when pressed.
