We have limited counter space and needed a toaster rather than our preference, a toaster oven. This is a basic toaster with no fancy settings or controls. It has nice wide slots for bagels and toasts fairly well although the outer elements do not seem to heat as strongly as the inner elements, so your toast is often lighter on one side than the other (we find we do not need to use the "bagel" setting). As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the handle sometimes does not engage in the down position. I find it not to be a problem as long as you push it down *firmly*, but my husband and kids often cannot get it to work. It is a bit slow to toast but I don't find that to be a problem, just requires a bit of coordination if you are cooking somethings else (say, eggs) to go with your toast. Overall OK, the red color compensates for some of the negatives for us.
